'CASTELO GREGÓRIO or CASTELO MONTE SERENO
At the top of the Serra de Sintra, a little below the Castelo dos Mouros and Palácio da Pena, is Castelo do Gregório or Castelo Monte Sereno.
The construction of Castelo do Gregório began between 1925 and 1927 by Gregório Casimiro Ribeiro, politician and founder of the famous Casa das Queijadas de Sintra, currently Pastelaria Gregório.
Gregório decided to build an inn in the shape of a castle, in an attempt to 'rival' with the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace. According to the story, Gregório had to give up the project for monetary reasons, having sold it to the North American family Sessel, in 1933. The construction we know today is the work of Architect Jorge Santos, who designed a building in the Art Deco style.
Currently Gregório Castle is known as Castelo Monte Sereno.
Throughout the property there are some references to the Order of the Holy Trinity, such as the cross inscribed in the small Sanctuary/Hermitage in the castle gardens.
Currently the property is in good condition due to maintenance by the owners, including the chapel with its magnificent tiles and Gothic stained glass. An immense land surrounds the property, with carefully tended gardens, offering magical corners that only Sintra can find.
Castelo Monte Sereno has 6,198m2 of land area and 792m2 of construction area, distributed as follows:
