“The Castello del Poggio in Guardea is one of the oldest castles in Italy. It is perfectly preserved and stands out from its dominant position in a context of particular beauty, above a protected area, bordering the wildlife oasis of the lake of Alviano. The Castle was built for defensive purposes around the year 1000 on a pre-existing Byzantine fortress.
In the following centuries, interventions were made to enlarge the original nucleus (composed of the central and Male body) which gave it the current rectangular shape and the creation of the real treasure of the castle: a central patio with loggia and stairways that is attributed to the prestigious mind of Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane. Many inscriptions and awards confirm the high value of Castello del Poggio, whose historical events are linked to names such as those of Princess Donna Olimpia Pamphili, Federico I Barbarossa, Carlo V, Cesare Borgia and Galileo Galilei.
Today this complex develops into three walls that enclose various living spaces, comfortable for residential and representative uses. The set of spaces is however harmoniously organized thanks to the recent renovations carried out in a workmanlike manner under the direction of the Superintendency of Perugia.
