About the Property and Its History

The origins of this remarkable estate stretch back to the 13th century, when the Klingenberg family established a castle on the rocky ridge above today’s property. Heinrich II of Klingenberg, bishop of Constance and patron of the arts, is one of its most notable historic figures. Following the decline of the Klingenbergs, the estate passed into the hands of the Haidenheim family before being acquired in 1651 by the Muri Monastery.

It was under the direction of Prince-Abbot Plazidus Zurlauben that the castle was transformed into the grand Baroque residence seen today, as part of the Counter-Reformation’s architectural expression. The complex was gradually rebuilt into a three-winged structure with chapel and courtyard after a series of fires. Following secularisation in 1841, the estate entered private ownership, and while the medieval fortress was dismantled, the Baroque castle itself was carefully preserved.

In the 20th century, the Santo family revitalised the castle’s role as a cultural and social hub by opening a restaurant within its walls. Since 1960, extensive restoration works have been undertaken with close guidance from preservation authorities, ensuring that the building retains its architectural integrity while being adapted for modern use.

Today, the castle offers a unique harmony of history, architecture, and natural setting. Its Rococo ballroom, Baroque chapel, and vaulted wine cellar embody cultural richness, while the surrounding barns, sheds, and extensive gardens provide space for new visions. With breathtaking views, historic character, and adaptable spaces, the estate represents a rare chance to live, work, or host within a piece of Swiss heritage.
