The Gothic-Renaissance mansion “Water Castle” is located in the village of Hronsek, near Banská Bystrica and is the oldest preserved two-storey stone building in Slovakia. The mansion has undergone a thorough renovation, thanks to which you can touch our history in the 21st century.
HISTORY
The history of the mansion dates back to the 14th century when it was built by the Géczy family and reached its current appearance at the end of the 16th century. Later it was also owned by other aristocratic families. It is worth noting that the father of the famous “White Lady of Levoča”, the Hungarian noblewoman Julianna Korponay-Géczy, was born and lived in the mansion. According to legend, she was charged with treason and was punished by beheading in public.
The cellars of the mansion used to serve as a prison, later, during the Rákoczi Revolt, coins were minted there. Due to the Turkish raids, the original castle had a fortification built consisting of a defensive wall with four corner bastions and a moat, which was crossable by drawbridge.
The greatest treasures of the mansion include mural paintings in the interior and a chimney in the superstructure of the mansion from the second half of the 14th century. The rooms have lavishly decorated tracery vaults with stucco Renaissance figures.
